Petrol prices are not too high if they encourage people to get out of their cars and walk, cycle, or use public transport wherever possible. This country needs a sustainable transport future. Blindly following the American way with 30+ million drivers simultaneously exercising their "right" to use their cars on this small island for every little trip will lead to spiralling congestion, pollution, and numbers of road accidents, not to mention fuelling the obesity problem.

True, but I think price is only one way to get people out of their cars. The car is generally the most convenient option if it's sitting in your driveway, so I'm not sure any rational cost-benefit analysis really comes into it. That involves maths and stuff.
ReplyDeleteI think we should be focussing really on improving alternatives to driving. And how about some more creative ways, like advertising last-minute "park and ride" train deals near motorways, or providing a safer, more attractive way for drivers to pick up hitch-hikers?
